Oregon Jobs and Transportation Bill Signed

Brent Barton looks on as Governor Kulongoski signs the Oregon Jobs and Transportation Act into law

Wednesday, July 29, Governor Kulongoski signed the Oregon Jobs and Transportation Act (JTA) into law. The JTA had bi-partisan support as it passed through the Oregon House and Senate. This legislation will put 40,000 Oregonians to work over the next ten years with projects improving Oregon infrastructure.

The package invests $100 million toward improving the intersection of Highway 212/224 with 82nd near I-205. This is a vital step for economic health of the region.

Rep. Barton said, “When it takes more than 30 minutes to move freight to I-205, companies that rely on transportation will leave. These businesses form the backbone the Clackamas economy. These improvements will reduce congestion and save jobs.”

The JTA will direct benefits throughout the region. Estacada will receive $52,000 every year per year to improve the city’s roads while Damascus receives more than $200,000. Clackamas County will get $8 million per year. Entering I-205 from I-5 during rush hour will be easier with a second northbound lane connecting the two interstate highways near Wilsonville.

“This bill will create jobs while spurring real economic growth,” said Rep. Barton.

Brent Barton represents district 51, which includes Clackamas, Damascus, Estacada, and parts of Happy Valley, Boring, Lents, and Oregon City.
